VILLIERS WELCOMES MARKET'S LIKELY MOVE BACK TO ST ALBANS ROAD

MP for Chipping Barnet, Theresa Villiers, has given a cautious welcome to the news that Barnet Market looks likely to move back and resume trading from its original site on St Albans Road in just a few weeks time.

According the market traders, Mr and Mrs Walsh who own the market, informed them of the move back to St. Albans Road after notifying Barnet Council that the market would be leaving the Stapylton Road car park within the month.

Theresa said, “I am pleased to hear the news that Barnet Market is likely to relocate back to its St Alban’s Road site. However, false hopes have been raised and dashed before on this so we will have to wait to see whether the move actually goes ahead.”

“It is vital that the market finds a permanent site as soon as possible. Although the market has still proved popular with shoppers even in its temporary home in the car park, the limited space available there has meant fewer stalls.”

“A move back to St Alban’s Road should solve the space problem although it leaves open the prospect of a move back to the car park at some point in the future, when the long planned redevelopment of the market site goes ahead.”

“Both I and local ward councillors remain absolutely determined to keep Barnet market flourishing. The market has been a central part of our community for hundreds of years and I will continue to work hard to secure its long term future.”
